Here’s one way how I use this specific sentence:
I’m a vegetarian/vegan, but the only one in my family & closer social circle. So I often get into discussions of why I don’t eat meat and people try to tell me that they could never stop eating meat, cheese, or whatever.
Depending on the situation, I sometimes say “I understand why you see it that way.” — because I really do. Eating meat is normal to them because they grew up that way, just like me — that’s why I can understand, even when I don’t agree with the point itself.
What might also help is the fact that you can say “I understand that”, but still explain how you see things and why you see them the way you do.
